Why comfort is killing us: the lost art of doing hard things
Share
Ever lost the plot when you burnt your toast?
Has anything that’s actually really hard to deal with happened to you?
The reality is that the comfort of our lives today is eating away at the micro stresses of the human race, those micro stresses used to keep us more strong, more resilient and more capable of dealing with the stresses of every day life. In 2016 Calabrese discovered that people who expose themselves to mild stressors live longer and report higher wellbeing. Sound good?
If you start with short deliberate discomfort such as cold exposure, this trains the body to adapt in these situations and recover faster. It also increases your heart rate variability (HRV) which we are learning is a key measure of resilience (Stanley 2019).
The king of doing hard things, Epictetus said difficulties show men what they are. We would argue that the world has moved on significantly in the last 2.5k years (thankfully) so we can apply this to both men and woman, the reality is that cold water is an ancient way to practise the art of doing hard thing’s. Being Well Cold brings it to you.
Coaching Note: This isn’t about freezing yourself for 10 minutes every morning so that the next time you burn your toast you are super chill. This is about investing a few minutes every morning to do something hard and focus on filling your cup.
